The adorable, fun-loving Bretton and Chris travelled from Alberta to be married in at her father’s home in beautiful Fanny Bay, which is just past Qualicum on the east coast of Vancouver Island.

Bretton asked for a natural, rustic bouquet with lots of foliage because of the wedding’s west coast setting. We used muted coloured roses, lysmachia, magnolia, eucalyptus, olive and rex begonia foliage.

The bridesmaids carried striking posies of solid baby’s breath (I think baby’s breath is great when it’s used in a mass like this). We were originally going to spray paint the baby’s breath gold to tie the bridal party colours into the overall wedding palette, but ultimately we decided to go for a more sophisticated look by using goal ribbons, which complemented the royal blue gowns.

The flower girl’s head wreath was made of olive leaf and spray roses.

Verbena Floral Design Victoria BCThe dinner was on long harvest tables, and to evoke the natural surroundings we used greenery and simple potted plants and bud vases of soft white blooms. This worked well because there wasn’t a lot of room on the tables for decor since it was a family-style meal.

One of our services is floral styling, and if that’s a new term to you, like it is to many people, this wedding is an example of where we were the floral stylists. Floral styling is not so much creating arrangements as taking a few floral elements and a few decor elements and styling them to create little vignettes on places like the bar, welcome tables, lounge areas and the ceremony site.Verbena Floral Design Victoria BC

The garland we created with mostly salal and silver dollar and we made it onsite and attached it to the ceiling and then lined the perimeter of the tent with plumosa ferns.

What’s a trip halfway around the world when what you want is a West Coast wedding surrounded by flowers? Alex, the groom, and Yu Nong, the bride, have family on different continents and there was no simple answer for where to have their wedding. Alex is from Washing State and Yu Nong is from Singapore. They are studying architecture in Singapore and have many friends and family there. But the West Coast called to them, and when a Washington wedding didn’t pan out, they decided to make beautiful Victoria, BC, their destination. This another example of how you can plan an entire event (an incredible event!) over the internet.
Barb from French Kiss brought the event to Vanessa, Verbena’s owner, and the two of them worked together to come up with a design for a couple months. This was a true farm-to-table-style dinner with all the elements on the table working around and in conjunction with the platters of food served up by The London Chef.
The wedding was held at a gorgeous Vancouver Island spot: the beautiful Starling Lane Vineyard, which is surrounded by forest on Old West Saanich Road, and an incredible team: Kelly Brown Photography, French Kiss Events, Ruth and Dean Baked GoodsConscious HairMelanie Baird Makeup… and us (that’s a link to our Facebook page if you’d like to follow us). We all had a really great time working on this wedding–there was so much style!
VerbenaThe flowers we chose were rich and dramatic, but rustic, which captured the essence of this couple: refined and relaxed.AYNblog5The wedding started at 9 a.m. with a tea ceremony. At 3 p.m. the couple said their vows surrounded by an intimate circle of their family and friends.AYNblog1AYNblog3AYNblog2AYNblog13AYNblog4AYNblog17_MG_5748AYNblog14AYNblog18AYNblog19

We’d never seen a ceremony done in the middle of the rose garden at Starling Lane, and were thrilled with how it looked.

AYNblog22_MG_5606_MG_5723AYNblog10AYNblog8_MG_5622The gorgeous succulents were grown just for this wedding. _MG_6065This was the first time we used our fancy new rustic bar, which we rent out as a set along with rustic stands for cocktail tables and more. It was well loved while guests and the couple and their family danced the night away to a swinging jazz trio._MG_5441Can you spot the stunning merlot coloured lady slipper orchid? A last minute addition, we added them to Yu Nong’s bouquet without knowing the national flower of Singapore is an orchid! Yu Nong and Alex were both so touched.

Beautiful Barb Raymond of French Kiss Events is one of the best wedding and event planners in the business. I was so grateful to be able to help style her own engagement photo shoot in December at Island View beach. Adrian Michael, a fine art film photographer based in Victoria, approached Barb about doing a winter engagement styled shoot in early December. Barb and Nick were the perfect models for a west coast-inspired wedding shoot. The shoot was so beautiful that Style Me Pretty featured it on their front page January 29, 2014. This blog post is a look at the shoot from a floral design-perspective. I used hellebores, purple acacia and plumosa fern in the floral crown to give it texture. I added pine, cedar and magnolia leaves to the bouquet and finished it with long feathers to set it off.
