Our team at Verbena was over the moon when we were hired for the wedding of rowing champs Silken Laumann and David Patchell Evans. The Olympic gold medallist and GoodLife Fitness owner were planning an intimate wedding at their home in Victoria, BC, and asked us to create large floral arrangements, bouquets and boutonnieres, and also to put together the table decor.

We combined white and green flowers with touches of burgundy and merlot as a subtle and sophisticated nod to the colours of the Canadian Flag. The team drew on nature-evoking foliage like ferns and grasses, and used gorgeous lime green hops, fluffy white hydrangeas and breathtaking roses. On the table, we used touches of dark grey, antique-inspired votives and tall dark grey tapers to set the mood. Laura Prpich from Tuktu Paper was the genius behind all the paper goods and the gorgeous turquoise leather journals at the place settings (an ode to Silken’s love of journaling). She created all the place cards (each with a hand-stamped wax seal), the menus and programs. Each place setting also had a beautiful velvety chocolate cosmo on the napkin.

Truffles created the amazing food for the sit-down dinner for 30 people on Friday and the party for 100 the next night. Side One, the best wedding Band in BC came over from Vancouver and had the dance floor full til the wee hours of the morning.
Silken’s make up done by Erin Bradley. Silken got her dress and her veil at The White Peony. The beautiful Photography is by Kelly Brown Photography. Can you believe this incredible wedding was planned and coordinated by Barb of French Kiss Events in under six weeks?!

What’s a trip halfway around the world when what you want is a West Coast wedding surrounded by flowers? Alex, the groom, and Yu Nong, the bride, have family on different continents and there was no simple answer for where to have their wedding. Alex is from Washing State and Yu Nong is from Singapore. They are studying architecture in Singapore and have many friends and family there. But the West Coast called to them, and when a Washington wedding didn’t pan out, they decided to make beautiful Victoria, BC, their destination. This another example of how you can plan an entire event (an incredible event!) over the internet.
Barb from French Kiss brought the event to Vanessa, Verbena’s owner, and the two of them worked together to come up with a design for a couple months. This was a true farm-to-table-style dinner with all the elements on the table working around and in conjunction with the platters of food served up by The London Chef.
The wedding was held at a gorgeous Vancouver Island spot: the beautiful Starling Lane Vineyard, which is surrounded by forest on Old West Saanich Road, and an incredible team: Kelly Brown Photography, French Kiss Events, Ruth and Dean Baked GoodsConscious HairMelanie Baird Makeup… and us (that’s a link to our Facebook page if you’d like to follow us). We all had a really great time working on this wedding–there was so much style!
VerbenaThe flowers we chose were rich and dramatic, but rustic, which captured the essence of this couple: refined and relaxed.AYNblog5The wedding started at 9 a.m. with a tea ceremony. At 3 p.m. the couple said their vows surrounded by an intimate circle of their family and friends.AYNblog1AYNblog3AYNblog2AYNblog13AYNblog4AYNblog17_MG_5748AYNblog14AYNblog18AYNblog19

We’d never seen a ceremony done in the middle of the rose garden at Starling Lane, and were thrilled with how it looked.

AYNblog22_MG_5606_MG_5723AYNblog10AYNblog8_MG_5622The gorgeous succulents were grown just for this wedding. _MG_6065This was the first time we used our fancy new rustic bar, which we rent out as a set along with rustic stands for cocktail tables and more. It was well loved while guests and the couple and their family danced the night away to a swinging jazz trio._MG_5441Can you spot the stunning merlot coloured lady slipper orchid? A last minute addition, we added them to Yu Nong’s bouquet without knowing the national flower of Singapore is an orchid! Yu Nong and Alex were both so touched.

On a sunny summer day, our dear, creatively gifted, hilarious, sweet (seriously, she’s the whole package) friend Daisy pulled off a surprise vow renewal and birthday party for her husband’s 40th. She did an incredible job secretly preparing this amazing event and while Adam was out fishing, we quickly transformed their home for the ceremony, sit-down dinner and party. Barb Raymond of French Kiss Events coordinated, Truffles Catering did the amazing meal, Mel Baird did make up and Elena Roberts of Conscious Hair styled her hair. The whole day was captured by one of the best photographers around, Ryan McDonald.

Vanessa helps with Daisy’s floral crown–isn’t it a fresh, bright take on the traditional floral crown? It’s perfectly Daisy, who loves quirky, unique things.

Daisy recruited her sons to help with the reveal. When their dad got back from fishing, they met him on the dock and gave him a note from their mom.

The guests were in for a surprise of their own! They thought they were coming for a surprise party for Adam, which they were, but they had no idea about the vow renewal. Daisy designed and wrote all the notes, signs and collages at the party, and everything reflected her creative talent and warmth.

Spot the lemons, artichokes, cabbage and other produce? We featured local produce heavily in the arrangements because the couple are the owners of The Root Cellar and their inspiration for opening the store was to enable Victoria residents to purchase local food from the many Vancouver Island farmers that have delicious, healthy food to offer.Orser425-L

Done! Now let’s get this party started, shall we?

This wedding proved that planning from afar over the internet can be easy. It was one of those weddings where everything is absolutely seamless. This couple is actually from Edmonton, but with the help of the groom’s sister, an event planner, they pulled off the quintessential garden wedding in Victoria, BC. When they came to us for flowers, they asked for soft, romantic and simple, and the colour scheme included shades of raspberry and peach, which we accented with complementary colours. All photos are courtesy of Rob and Julia Campbell at Ameris photography (check out their website–their photos are incredible!).
