So Christine loves peonies and I love cake, so together on her birthday we are a good pair. Christine is one lucky girl for so many reasons but the biggest one of all has to be that her birthday just happens to fall in the perfect time of year for her favourite flowers; peonies, lily of the valley and rannuncullas. Corina Ludwig from Passion for Cakes is a master cake maker and I had her design this fantastic cake to go along with Christine’s favorite flowers. Every one should be so lucky as to have a cake made by Corina just once in their life. We celebrated this year at the fabulous London Chef Cooking School with an amazing dinner and a laughter filled evening of friends. Oh yeah…I brought the flowers, and Jenna Shouldice took the pictures.

Wedding Open House at Sea Cider

A few weeks ago we were asked by Christine Smart out at Sea Cider if we would like to participate in an open house with them and Truffles Catering to showcase some ideas for all their upcoming weddings. We just had to use 2 of our favorite coloured roses “Cherry Brandy” and “Latin Ambiance” along with some beautiful fresh green viburnum and some pale pink lisianthus. This palette was one of the 2 we had chosen the other was of course the classic and timeless white and green. This we accomplished with a simple and modern arrangement of white and green and Hydrangea. Of course we dragged Jenna Shouldice (nee Tye) to capture our work with her artistic eye and lens. Gosh we are so spoiled to have such enourmesly talented friends who are willing to shoot for us. We met with some wonderful people and look forward to being able to work with them in the future.

As I mentioned in the previous post there were 22 professional photographers at that wedding. A lot of whom shoot weddings here in Victoria and ALL of whom we can highly reccomend because we have had the privilage of working with them. What a way to end our wedding season this year. Two of our most favorite people in the whole world, and without a doubt two of the most talented photographers we and many others have had the pleasure of working with got married today. What a day it was! The sun shone and the autumn leaves seemed to shimmer with extra brilliance as Tristan Shouldice married Jenna Tye under the garry oak tree’s in the garden of the beautiful Fireside Grill. Much will be recorded, written, photographed and blogged about this wedding as the room was filled with some of the best wedding photographers around. Not only were we lucky enough to be able to do the floral design for this wedding but both of our family’s attended with Vanessa’s daughter Lily as the flower girl /”photographer in training”. Lily and Kai, the ringbearer, got swept up in the photographer energy and a little photoshoot for themselves.

We will be absolutely thrilled and honoured to have a record of this wedding included in our gallery as it was photographed by the genius eye’s of Ben Chrisman and Erin Reed, international wedding photographers from San Fransisco. As Jenna so eloquently put it tonight in her speech, these two “taught her how to see”. The dinner and party was “sound-tracked” by the best in the business Party People Sound Solutions, Angus is bar none the best DJ around. Of course we had to get ourselves looking ship shape for this “wedding of the year” so the lovely hands and make-up artistry of Mel Baird transformed us before we headed off. There is a reason she is booked every single weekend of the wedding season. We have watched Mel transform many of the same brides we have worked with, and we now gladly have the ability to personally reccomend her to all our brides. Below is a record of our floral journey from buckets to bouquets and centrepieces, only this time our pictures feature more of the people as they should. We believe that the flowers speak for themselves and our record is but one of many that will be shared of this day. Thank you to both Jenna and Tristan, our hearts were in every arrangement that surrounded you today!

A day in the life of a Verbena Wedding set up….

The brilliant Jenna Tye came with us on yet another wedding set up, to capture some images for us. Her work speaks for itself and her intuituition and eye for the story behind the scenes are second to none. We are absolutly smitten with her and her photography and are eagerly awaiting her wedding day in a few weeks when we can return the favour of beauty with our floral designs. Jenna suggested we do a post with some b&w images of us “hard” at work. Our work days are often filled with gales of laughter, fun and inspiring beauty. We always end up having a great time with our clients, and love the chance we get to know them as we work with them to make thier visons become a reality. Here are some moments behind the scenes from a recent job.

World Rose Festival June 2009

It was an absolute honour in every sense of the word, for us to be asked by three of our “idols” in the Floral Design world, to create a piece for this year’s World Rose Festival.

Hilary Miles, Maureen Sullivan and Donna Hutton contacted us in early January and asked if we would like to represent Vancouver Island in the Floral Design component of the festival. It took place in the spectacular new Vancouver Convention Centre and was displayed in the “floral promenade”. We used over 200 stems of imported roses in all shades ranging from pale champagne to bright orange. Jenna Tye the brilliant photographer from Victoria accompanied us and our design all the way from our studio, on the ferry too the massive convention centre. Jenna never disapoints no matter what the subject is to so keep checking our website for Rose Festival spread in the galleries. In the mean time here are a few sneak peaks. Emily & Beau Sea Cider June 12th, 2009

Another magical day for a wedding at Sea Cider that we were thrilled to be a part of. Emily and Beau were married in the evening on June 12th while looking out over the view from the deck in the ciderhouse. The couple, from New Zealand, had flown in a few days prior and the day could not have been more perfect for them. Once again we met and planned with Emily over lots of emails and a few spotty calls back and forth. We chose to go with a rustic, west coast elegant theme, using several different kinds of textural folliage and filler. Waxflower, buplereum, pittisporum and salal were the base of all the table centres and they were accented with beautiful soft apricot roses. The tables were set with the most extrordinary individual sets of antique china that the brides mother has been lovingly collecting over the years. Between the china, roses, shells and driftwood the tables looked fantastic and the tent was simply stunning. . The large arrangements flanking the ceremony site were overflowing with light green Annabelle hydrangeas, soft white lisianthus and whispy fiber optic grass. Emily’s bouquet was a perfect posy of lush white and soft pink peonies accented with the clean elegant lines of lavendar calla lilies, and white orchids. Her bridesmaids carried small posies with similar blooms including the highlights of soft apricot spray roses. Our lovely friend Margaret joined us on Thursday in our studio to lend her talented hands to the 21 centrepieces we made. How lucky we were to have our talented and beloved friend Jenna Tye follow us to capture the floral journey from start to finish. The abundently talented Christine Smart coordinated the event and was the magic touch that made things go so smoothly for us as we arrived to set up. Thank you Christine! Truffles expertly catered and executed the dinner and drinks for the evening. We can’t wait to see photos of the beautiful Emily in her dress and more images of the entire day captured by Erica Chan, check out her blog teaser. Let Them Eat Cake

This past weekend we were honoured to be asked by our friends at Bernstien & Gold to participate in their annual Fashion Show benefiting the Women’s Transition House Society. They teamed up with the best clothing stores in Victoria; Rebel Rebel, Addiction, Luv It Boutique and put on a spectacular show in the front garden of a private home in Rockland. The theme of the event was “Marie Antoinette”, which for us conjured up images of giant blooms in white, and pink. Big, lush and full. We created the arrangements using the most divine pink and white roses, peonies in pale pink and white and of course the most decadent of blooms the giant white hydrangea. Our beautiful friend, and uber talented Jenna Tye came with us and captured these fabulous images for us. Check out her own blog about Let Them Eat Cake . We had a blast being a part of this event and loved working for a great cause with such amazing local business women. Truly an exceptional bunch that we are proud to call our peers.

We were happy to be asked by Island Bridal Guide to provide the florals for their gala reception to launch their new high end Bridal Guide. We decided to follow in the footsteps of one of our favorite weddings from the summer, especially given that it was at the lovely Villa Marco Polo.

We found a little slice of Italy in Central Saanich. The small hazelnut farm was transformed into a spectacular venue for a beautiful reception. The vision was a simple elegant and intimate table for 75. We kept the floral decor to a minimum using potted herbs, we had been cultivating since early June so they would be full and lush. We potted them in rustic clay containers, they were interspersed with ivory pillar candles, and small votives. The entire tent was truly glowing and bathed in candle light.
